OUR WORK

SCHOOL & COMMUNITY OUTREACH

It is crucial to increase community awareness about girls and young women's rights. Advocacy campaigns can change attitudes and ultimately influence decision-making in schools, homes and in communities. In order to spur action, specific advocacy programs are needed. By using strategic advocacy techniques, Girls Talk encourages community stakeholders to talk about the harmful traditional practices and other issues affecting women and girls, in order to end discrimination against them.

GIRLS WORKOUT DAY

Each year, Girls Talk hosts a fundraising workout day. This event is hosted to encourage young girls to participate actively in health and fitness activities. This event brings together girls of all ages, ethnicity or group to be trained on simple workout techniques and how to stay healthy. It is a day filled with fun, food, drinks, a mini-seminar on personal hygiene, workout sessions and aerobics by Professional gym fitness instructors.

POLITICAL LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Our political development program equip young girls and women with the knowledge, skills, and confidence necessary to engage in decision-making processes actively, contribute to policy development, and emerge as influential leaders. With a focus on promoting inclusivity and equity, it creates a brighter and more prosperous future for The Gambia. Through well-structured activities and comprehensive training, the program aspires to foster a new generation of young female leaders who will drive meaningful change in their communities and beyond.

GIRLS MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

Through our Girls Mentorship Programme, we empower girls between the ages of 10 and 18 through an intensive month-long mentorship training course. The training program consists of sessions filled with conversations and activities led by resource persons who are highly trained and experienced in topics such as child marriage, female genital mutilation/cutting, sexual violence, building support networks, family relationships, and other concerns that participants have identified as of particular importance to them. The program provides girls with knowledge and skills on a wide range of subjects relevant to their lives, such as health and legal rights. Learning skills that assist girls in their personal development allows them to communicate better, negotiate more effectively, and make better decisions that positively affect their lives.

ALL MEN SUMMIT

We are unique as an organisation because we believe in inclusiveness in achieving equality. In this case, we organise our annual All Men Summit to bring together young men from various backgrounds to discuss social, societal and gender-related issues. This event highlights how important it is for men to get involved in mainstreaming and understanding issues affecting women and girls, and how much they can contribute to ending discrimination against them.

ENDING PAD POVERTY

Among Girls Talk's key goals is ending pad poverty. We raise funds every year to support girls in rural communities, especially those who live in hard-to-reach areas, with reusable sanitary products. Over the years, we have helped over 300 girls and young women in The Gambia, and we aim to reach more than 1000 of them. As a result, girls would be more likely to remain in school, feel comfortable, and not miss school because of their periods.
