Our Work in The Gambia
Girls Talk began its journey in The Gambia, where we continue to tackle some of the most pressing issues affecting girls and young women through culturally responsive, grassroots initiatives. Rooted in community engagement, our approach blends advocacy, education, and empowerment to challenge the systems and traditions that hold girls back.
Key Program Areas in The Gambia

Ending Harmful Traditional Practices
We actively work to end practices such as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and child marriage by engaging with local communities, religious leaders, families, and youth. Using dialogue, storytelling, and policy engagement, we raise awareness and drive sustainable change from within.

Mentorship & Safe Spaces
We run school-based girl clubs, peer-mentoring networks, and leadership development sessions that help girls build confidence and solidarity. These spaces nurture critical thinking, self-expression, and a strong sense of sisterhood that empowers girls to lead change in their communities.

SRHR Education & Menstrual Hygiene
We provide accurate information on sexual and reproductive health and distribute menstrual hygiene kits, especially to girls in underserved communities. This ensures that no girl misses school or opportunities because of her period, while promoting dignity, confidence, and long-term health.

Community Engagement
We actively involve parents, religious leaders, traditional authorities, and teachers in transforming harmful norms and creating safe environments for girls. By fostering dialogue and collective responsibility, we build community-led support systems that uphold girls’ rights and dignity.

Mental Health Access
We train mentors, work with psychologists, and provide mental health support to girls and their families, recognizing the impact of trauma and stigma. Our approach fosters healing, resilience, and safe spaces where girls can express themselves and thrive emotionally.

Policy & Systems Change
Girls Talk amplifies youth voices in policy discussions and national campaigns, ensuring that the lived realities of girls shape the decisions that affect their futures. We have collaborated with lawmakers, civil society, and UN agencies to influence national strategies.
